You are a Brand

“Your brand is what people think about when they hear your name.” –Michael Ellsberg author, The Education of Millionaires

That’s a brand. No more no less.

Try listing 25 top names in any luxury or high netting industry:

Tom Ford

McKinsey and Company

95% of Advertising/Architecture Firms use the founder/partner’s name

Tommy Hilfiger

Dreamworks SKG (Spielberg, Katzenberg, Geffen)

Huffington Post

Lauren (knew his name is everything, and changed it!)

See a pattern?  5  are not  people ( the founders of the company)

So how do you build a you/brand from scratch?

You can hire a consultant and PR firm which costs upwards of  $10,000 a mth

In the real world they say it’s one of the hardest things to do.

What’s a brand name if nobody knows you?

So you’re a nobody who needs to be somebody.

Steal from the best and make it into your own. Study their history.

These people were born with a name and leveraged it in the real world.

Now how do you do that? Well I’m a nobody who intends to be somebody.

“Action is the foundational key to all success.” -Pablo Picasso

So Step #1 is deciding you want to be somebody.

Step #2 Pouring yourself into yourself.  ie)  Go shopping with your Brand Basket to cater to your personality, interests and influences. Even read magazines and stories you wouldn’t usually read. Explore.

Step #3 Solve a problem in a creative way. (Do the opposite* no matter how subtle)  *Ralph Lauren made thick ties when slim ties were fashionable.

Step#4: Leverage your distinction and work it. *Ralph Lauren wouldn’t sell his ties to Bloomingdale’s unless they had his name on it. Bloomingdale’s eventually caved, and sold his ties.

James “The Hardest Working Man in Showbiz.” Brown has one gear.

That’s the intensity that is necessary for long-term branding

Step#5 Connect on the internet, comment and sign up for site that you can promote yourself and your solution on related websites. Build an Audience with SEO.

Step#6 Read Dan Kennedy for everything you need to know about Marketing. *But what I’m doing is putting my own spin on it.

In the interest of succinctness, more to come  on how I’m doing it in following posts.

Brand + Money  never sleeps.
